Stories of Constructions (or stories of the varying relationships between Architecture and Engineering)
MI/ARCH, the International Festival of Architecture promoted by Politecnico di Milano, every year hosts a series of conferences, meetings and public events.
Its fourth edition started on 12th October and will explore until 15th October 2016 the architecture-engineering nexus through the particular perspective of construction processes: a series of emblematic stories concerning the construction of simple structures within the contemporary space. The aim is to explore the forms through which Architecture and Engineering techniques intersect or overlap, sometimes colliding other times cooperating fruitfully.
Architects and engineers, co-protagonist of the same construction story, talked about some of their projects that have been realized – buildings, landscapes, infrastructures, tools – highlighting the internal tensions experienced between Architecture techniques and Engineering branches.
During the four days of MI/ARCH we heard the voices of some of the leaders of international architecture: Solano Benítez, BIG, Grimshaw Architects, Grüntuch Ernst Architekten, Francis Kéré, Greg Lynn, Keichii Matsuda, Kazuyo Sejima, Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects), Ábalos-Sentkiewicz Arquitectos, Benedetta Tagliabue with Julio Martinez Calzon and Francesco Iorio, Alejandro Zaera-Polo and many many others.
Noteworthy was the speech of Kazuyo Sejima (in the jury of the arcVision Prize 2013-2015) titled “Ecublens (SUI). Rolex Learning Center”,and the roundtable “Shanghai (CHN) and Milano. Expo and experiments with structures” by Benedetta Tagliabue (in the jury of the arcVision Prize 2013-2016)with Julio Martinez Calzon (engineer MC2)and Francesco Iorio (SIO Studio Iorio).
May/November 2016 – Benedetta Tagliabue, in the jury of the arcVision Prize from 2013 to 2016, is one of the architects of the Youbang Campus project, presented at the 15th Architecture Biennale Venezia, part of the exhibition “Sharing & Regeneration” open until 27th of November 2016.
26th May 2016 – Open to the public from Saturday May 28th to Sunday November 27th 2016 at the Giardini and the Arsenale, the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, titled REPORTING FROM THE FRONT, will be directed byAlejandro Aravena and organized by La Biennale di Venezia chaired by Paolo Baratta.

Ma Yansong MAD ARCHITECTS
Founded in 2004 by the Chinese architect Ma Yansong (Beijing, 1975), MAD Architects is a global architecture studio engaged in the development of futuristic, organic and technologically advanced projects. Through its philosophy, expressed in the book Shanshui City (Lars Müller Publishers, 2015) – a vision of the city of the future based on the spiritual and emotional needs of the residents – MAD seeks a balance between man, city and environment. Today the studio has offices in Beijing and Los Angeles, and is directed by Ma Yansong, Dang Qun and Yosuke Hayano.
MAD has created urban planning projects and urban complexes, museums, theaters, social housing, and renewal projects for old neighborhoods and monuments. In 2006 the studio won the competition for the Absolute Towers of Mississauga in Canada, a residential project for two skyscrapers, 56 and 50 stories, which in 2012 won the Best Tall Building Americas prize of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. In 2014 the studio received the commission to design the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago. Among the urban projects presently in progress, the Chaoyang Park Plaza is a complex located in the new Central Business District of Beijing. In China the studio has designed the Pingtan Art Museum (in Pingtan, now in the development phase), the Harbin Cultural Island (Harbin, 2015), the Ordos Museum (Ordos, 2011) and the China Wood Sculpture Museum (Harbin, 2013).
In the center of Rome, on Via Boncompagni, MAD is designing a multifunctional courtyard building for apartments, offices and a church. In Paris the studio took first place in a competition for the construction of a residential complex on the Rive Droite

REALISMO MAGICO

“The founders of Studio 5+1AA confront the contemporary in the way they address the relationship between territory, city and architecture, constructing this relationship as a representation of reality.
