A seminar provided by the Univesity of Bergamo, Italcementi Cav. del Lav. Carlo Pesenti Foundation, Harvard Graduate School of Design Responsive Environments & Artifacts Lab

The Bergamo 2.(035) – “A new urban concept for a new world” – research program is motivated by the need to conceive an articulated, long-term and comparative vision of the most relevant future developments of an urban environment and its territory.

This vision would trigger the discussion and the definition of the main strategic lines for mastering their trajectories of evolution and identifying the decision-making leverages to tackle the most prominent critical issues.

Unlike other similar programs, Bergamo 2.(035) is mainly focused on an urban and territorial context which is typical of a mid-sized town with a vast territory highly characterized by a relevant industrial tissue, but which has also preserved a well rooted rural economy.

The aim is to capitalize at best the huge and immense cultural and social capital of a millenary town, which would not perceive its historical past as a tight chain inhibiting its innovation thrust, but rather as a valuable heritage which would act as a spring for the future. A town which would be mainly designed for the young future generations.

Bergamo 2.(035) will not be a cyber-city where the technology is a pervasive element and main purpose of the design and implementation of actions. It would put at the center of its study the citizens of the future: people who would be yet endowed with highly performing technological devices, but also with a full awareness of their role in the society as an active and participative part of the different ecosystems where they would operate.

Bergamo 2 (035) is a research program, providing the foundation and common ground of a series of projects which, though oriented on a specific application area or issue to be resolved, would benefit from sharing a common vision.

Given the stated goals, the study requires the cooperation and the integration of multiple disciplinary knowledge and the active involvement of academic experts and international opinion leaders, in order to make comparative analyses with international cases, making Bergamo and its many territories a laboratory of innovation within which to develop and evolve models for sustainable development.

The project is structured two phases: the development of the vision to define how the European city will develop in the medium term and, subsequently, the vision of the city and the territories of Bergamo to address the possible consequences of the general model and compare with the medium-term future of the city considering the particular situation of the city and territories of Bergamo (see Bergamo 2.(035) timeline and methodology of work).
