Alessi and Italcementi present the winner of the contest #Concrete In Design

27th March – 2nd April 2014

Alessi and Italcementi present the winner of the contest #ConcreteinDesign: the project “Tribute to the craftsman” the centrepiece made of i.design effix designed by Luca Galbusera.

The results of the competition #ConcreteinDesign―promoted by Alessi and Italcementi and aimed at young designers―were presented at a preview at the Alessi FlagShip Store in Milan. The exhibition was centered around the centerpiece designed by the 30-year-old winner, Luca Galbusera, a designer from Lombardy. His centerpiece consists of a fruit bowl for indoor and outdoor spaces made of i.design EFFIX cement, a material for high performance creativity developed by Italcementi.

The title of the winning proposal “A Tribute To The Craftsman” “wants to emphasize the importance of the craftsman, not only as an individual with his own work, but particularly as the guardian of his own art. A worker who, in essence, is a full-time operator of his discipline,” said Luca Galbusera when presenting his product. Through www.desall.com, the web platform for participatory design of new products and the digitalization of the creative process, 200 designers from 112 countries participated in the contest #ConcreteInDesign, submitting a total of 302 projects.

The winner says of himself: “I’m a designer trained at the School of Design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. I started my career as an interior designer working for firms or individuals. I’m interested in human housing using an approach which I hope can expand its infinite diversity.”

Since February Luca Galbusera has been hosted by Italcementi at its Center for Research and Innovation, i.lab, for workshops organized by Laura Polinoro’s LPWK Design Studio, who has been working with Alessi for design workshops worldwide. At i.lab the winning project has been studied, modified and improved to increase its performances to eventually develop a new product that could become part of a future Alessi collection.

A complex work in progress, during which Luca Galbusera and Italcementi, together with Laura Polinoro and Alessi, have jointly worked at using the project’s mathematical data to create the nylon structure in all its details with a 3D printer. Subsequently, Italcementi and CREA Cemento, a company specialized in high quality concrete items, have collaborated in the realization of the prototype; a variety of colors and surfaces have been tested, through progressive experimentation and modifications, in order to get amazing objects. The centerpiece will be exhibited at the Alessi FlagShip Store, Via Manzoni 14/16 in Milan, until April 2, 2014 just before the start of the Milan Furniture Fair and the Milan Design Week.
