Italcementi and Triennale di Milano: awards to “Architecture Made in Italy”.

Triennale_di_Milano__Medaglia_d_Oro_all_Architettura_Italiana_-_IV_Edizione__2012The award is the outcome of collaboration between Italcementi Group, La Triennale di Milano, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC), and MADE expo.  The President of La Triennale di Milano, Claudio De Albertis, awarded the 2012 Gold Medal for Italian Architecture to Vincenzo Latina, for the Access Pavilion to the Artemision Excavations in Siracusa. Siracusa, Italy 2007-2011.

REASONS
The jury presided over by Ennio Brion, with Cecilia Bolognesi, Ole Bouman, Alberto Ferlenga, Massimiliano Fuksas, Fulvio Irace and Luca Molinari, has unanimously awarded the 2012 Gold Medal for Italian Architecture to the Access Pavilion to the Artemision Excavations in Siracusa.

For its skill in working on the remains of ancient buildings to bring them back to life, salvaging a memory that would otherwise have been lost.

The choice of this project intends to attest to the great capacity of Italian architecture to work with available resources, overcoming the difficulties posed by the context.

The project tells a story: the story of Italy. This is how modern and contemporary architecture make their mark on history and become part of it.

The Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement is awarded to Vittorio Gregotti, Gae Aulenti and Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo. The Special First Work Award is awarded to Estudio Barozzi Veiga for the Enlargement of the Ribera del Duero PDO Wine Headquarters in Roa, Burgos, Spain 2006-2011.

The Special Patron’s Award is awarded, for public patrons, to the Comune di Venezia for the LCV. Law Court Venice (2011) by C+S Associati: Carlo Cappai, Maria Alessandra Segantini; for private patrons, to PRATIC F.lli Orioli SpA for the Management and Production Headquarters (Fagagna, UD, Italy, 2010-2011) by GEZA – Gri e Zucchi Architetti Associati

The Special Award – Wood in Architecture goes to Abdarchitetti Botticini-De Apollonia & Associati for the Experimental Housing Units in Selvino (Selvino, BG, Italy 2010).

In addition, six Honourable Mentions have been awarded for the New Buildings section to Piuarch for the Bentini Headquarters Faenza, RV, Italy 2011; for the Parks and Gardens section to Gualtiero Oberti and Attilio Stocchi for Lumen, Lumezzane, BS, Italy 2009-2011; for the Infrastructure section to Scagnol Matteo, Attia Sandy – Modus Architetti; for the Conversion and Restoration section, to Michele De Lucchi for the Library of the Istituto Storia dell’Arte e Restauro in the Manica Lunga of Fondazione Cini, Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore, VE, Italy 2009; for the Architecture and Emergencies section to Tamassociati for the Container Medical Compound for Salam Centre, Emergency NGO, Khartoum, Sudan 2009; for the Architecture, Planning and Future section to Laboratorio Permanente for The Conquest of the Horizon, Italy 2012.
